April 16th 2012 - Xila gives birth to third colt

He will be called Herdeiro which means "one who will inherit".  We hope he will inherit all of the best qualities from Vinagre and Xila just as all his siblings have !

November 2011 - Vinagre qualifies for Winter Regionals

Vinagre is having a very successful first season wtih Jacky and has now qualified for the Winter Regionals!  He has been placed 1st in the majority of his outings and has a fantastic average score of over 68%

May 2011 - A new phase for Vinagre

Hurstwood Lusitano Stud has completed a very exciting deal with top dressage rider Jacky Stolper.  Jacky will now be competing Vinagre, while the Stud retains full breeding rights and will continue to market Vinagre via AI as well as producing his youngstock.

Vinagre has demonstrated his ability to pass on his talent to his foals but we felt he needed more competition exposure.  The deal with Jacky is an incredible opportunity for the Stud and will enable Vinagre to achieve his considerable potential as a dressage sport horse.

Jacky and Vinagre are already creating a stir, achieveing 69% and a mention in Horse and Hound on their first outing and we are following his career with considerable excitement.

June 20th 2010 - Encruzilhada triumphs at the 1st Festival of the Iberian Horse

Pachesham Equestrian Centre hosted the 1st Festival of the Iberian Horse on Sunday 2th June.  We entered Damita and Encruzilhada (Cruz) in the Pure bred Lusitano youngstock class and the yearling Cruz narrowly beat Damita into 2nd place.  Cruz is by our foundation stallion Vinagre out of my favourite mare, Zafari de LYW.

Cruz then went on to win the Lusitano In-Hand Championship and stood reserve in the Lusitano Show Champion to the ridden class winner Vic.

Both young horses behaved extremely well.  This was Cruz's first ever outing and only Damita's second and both of them took the whole day in their stride.

Hopefully this new show will become a permanent fixture on the calendar.  The facilities are good and the show was well run and organised.

May 16th 2010 - Xila gives birth to a colt

Xila gave birth to a colt at just after 5.30 on Sunday 16th May.   He will be called Falante which means talkative - he was neighing to the other horse on the yard before he had his first meal!

April 2010 - Vinagre Returns to the UK

The oportunities to compete in Portugal are so few and far between that we have decided to bring Vinagre back to the UK to take advantage of the many competitions here.  He will be based with Lourenco Cavaleiro in Kent.

Zafari gave birth in the early hous of Tuesday 5th May to a beautiful filly - 12 days early - so bit of a surprise.   Mother and daughter are both happy and well.  The filly is a tall, strong foal with a small white snip just like Dad's.

May 2009 - Vinagre's Training Progressing Well

IMG_1690_crop_web.jpg

Over the May bank holiday we visited Vinagre and his trainer, Bento Castelhano, in Beja, Portugal.  Vinagre was looking spectacular!  We last saw him in the flesh at his grading at the end of January and it was truly  amazing how much he has changed in 3 months.  I have worked with Lusitanos with almost pure Vega bloodlines for the last 20 years and it still amazes me just how much they change between 6 and 8 years of age.  It is only as they near 8 years old that you start to see the mature horse emerge.

Bento is very please with Vinagre and is full of praise for his trainability.  As Vinagre becomes stronger and more balanced, his paces just get better and better.  We are now looking forward to getting him out competing this summer.

January 2009 - Vinagre achieves Studbook * Grading

Lusitano Grading - Golega January 17th 2009

Vinagre was presented for grading at Golega by Bento Castelhano.  Of the 22 horses brought forward, Vinagre was one of only 4 stallions to achive Studbook star grading status (Studhorse *).

This was Vingare's first public apperance and despite the pressure of the event, he gave a foot perfect performance.

See the Gallery for more pictures from the grading.

Vinagre returns home!

In late July Vinagre returned to Portugal for a short stay.

The awful English summer just got too much for me and he wasn't getting the work he needs at this stage of his career.  Vinagre will be in training and competition with Bento Castelhano until end 2009.

We have already been out to see him.  He has settled in very well and is progressing at an amazing rate.

February 2008

Mares_comp.jpg

The trip to Portugal in January was successful and we are proud owners of 2 beautiful mares both daughters of the international dressage star Guizo.

Hurstwood Lusitanos are privileged to be the only stud in the UK carrying the blood line of not only the most successful competition Lusitano ever but also one of the most successful dressage stallions of any breed including the warmblood!  Details of the mares will be on the site very soon but here is a photo of Xila (on the right) and Zafari while still in the Portuguese sunshine.

We will be visiting Portugal again in January for what will hopefully be our final trip to source 2 new mares for the stud.  We think we have found the perfect bloodlines to match our beautiful stallion, Vinagre, in the shape of 2 young mares.  This visit is to finalise the details and if all goes well they will be back in England with us by the end of February.  Check back soon for details of this exciting phase in the Stud’s development!
